Microsoft patch leads to computer troubles
Just two days after Microsoft released security updates on February 9, some Windows users reported that they were unable to reboot their systems after installing the updates, getting only a blue screen, according to posts on a Windows forum. Most of the complaints centered around issues with Windows XP, although there were reports of problems with Windows 7 and Vista that were experiencing the “blue screen of death” as well. Forum moderator Kevin Hau indicated that the problem patch – KB977165 – addresses a vulnerability in the 32-bit Windows kernel. Microsoft is investigating the reports to determine the cause of the problems, according to a posting on the Microsoft Security Response Center blog by Jerry Bryant, senior security communications manager lead at Microsoft. “We are aware that after installing the February security updates a limited number of users are experiencing issues restarting their computers,” said Bryant. “Our teams are working to resolve this as quickly as possible” Additionally, Bryant said that the company stopped offering this update as soon as it found out about the issue, although it has continued offering other updates released at the same time.
