Federal funding to help Massachusetts' South Shore, Cape Cod
The OpenCape Corporation announced earlier this month that it received a $32 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to improve broadband speed and access in Massachusetts' Cape Cod. OpenCape also announced that it will use $8 million of its own money to improve access as part of the project. Part of the project calls for the construction of a data center on the Cape. There are no centers currently operating in the area. “The regional data center creates a place on this side of the canal where businesses can safely house servers and from which regional umbrella services could be deployed,” the newspaper reported. “The regional data center will be placed on top of the hill in the county complex, in the building attached to the large antenna. The network design and power grid logistics support this location, and it is close to the geographic center of the Cape as well.” Several states have received funding from the ARRA in recent weeks to improve web access in areas that need it. Also, the Federal Communications Commission is set to unveil its plan to improve nation broadband access next week.
