Phishing for personal info on Social Media sites keeps users on guard

The proliferation of phishing attacks and other online security threats have users worried about sharing information when visiting social networking sites, according to a recent survey. RSA, the security division of EMC, announced this as part of the results of its 2010 Global Online Consumer Security Survey. The survey polled more than 4,500 people regarding their awareness of online threats, concerns with the safety of their personal information online and their willingness to share it, and desire for better identity protection. Even as the number of people engaged in social media swells to the hundreds of millions – Facebook alone said it has topped 350 million users – the survey showed that 65 percent of people who belong to these online communities indicated they are less likely to interact or share information due to their growing security concerns. Even as consumer awareness of phishing attacks doubled between 2007 and 2009, the number of consumers who reported falling prey to this attack increased six times during that same period of time, according to the report.
